Mt. Carmel to induct Dowling to hall of fame
Published as part of the May 2, 2012 edition.
While the honorees at Mt. Carmel High School Alumni Banquet will read like a sportsman’s Who’s Who on Friday, May 4, one name will resonate for the crusade his family has launched to generate scholarship funding for those in need.
Kevin Dowling, class of 1996, will be inducted posthumously into the Hall of Fame at the Cacciatore Athletic Center. Sharing in the emotions of the induction will be the family that has kept their loved one’s memory alive through the Kevin Dowling Scholarship, established in 1995, and credited with generating more than $150,000 in scholarships.
Football great Donovan McNabb, ’94, will be honored as Mt. Carmel Man of the Year. Other inductees in this year’s Hall of Fame include Vince Scannell, ’77, Patrick Doyle, (H), Chris Chelios (H), Tom Nicklas (H), Marty McGarry, ’72, Anthony Rossi, Dr. Michael Liston, Marita Tierney and Sam and Cindy Panayotovich will become Honorary Alumni. Chuck Blasgen,’64, will receive the Fr. Aquinas Colgan, O. Carm. Humanitarian Award.
Dowling, a co-captain of the 1995 Mt. Carmel Caravan football team, suffered liver failure and cardiac arrest and passed away Aug. 26, 1995. The many lives the St. John Fisher Elementary School graduate touched over the years inspired actions that still resonate around the South Side.
- Kevin Dowling’s name adorns the scoreboard at Beverly Park.
- Monies from the Kevin Dowling fund are used to donate more than 1,000 five-gallon water coolers to grammar schools and high school in the Chicago Archdiocese.
- The Kevin Dowling/ Tom Dart Flag Football league has introduced 300 young grade-schoolers to football.
- The annual Kevin Dowling Christmas Is for Kids Toy Drive has raised more than $100,000 in money and gifts to area hospitals and programs.
The scholarship money is earmarked for a graduating St. John Fisher student entering a Catholic high school; graduating senior from Mt. Carmel High School entering a college; and graduating senior from an Archdiocese of Chicago High School entering college.
“Our goal is to keep Kevin’s name alive,” said scholarship committee member Jim McKeever. “We are inspired by the way Kevin lived his life. He lives on in all of us. Kevin truly is in our Hall of Fame and in our hearts.”
